ARTIST STATEMENT

My practice centres the study of my immediate environment as a way of drawing attention to the unseen and often overlooked aspects of everyday life. The concept of the mundane became a key focus during my final year of university and has since remained central to my work. Through the lens of my own lived experience as a young woman, I use my personal spaces as sites of identity and self-expression to explore these quiet and familiar moments. 

 

Working primarily with traditional mediums such as oil painting and pencil drawing, I like to create intimate and subjective representations of daily life. I appreciate the unpredictable nature of many traditional mediums, and the close connection it builds to the work. 

 

By grounding my work in personal experience, I aim to foster a sense of intimacy between the artwork and the viewer. I am interested in giving visibility to the subtle, mundane emotions that shape our lives, and recognise them as shared aspect of the human experience to evoke feelings of comfort, familiarity, and acceptance. I often maintain a sense of ambiguity within my work by withholding a clear physical identity, allowing viewers to engage with the images in their own subjective ways. 

 

My practice is informed by the work of female artists who use traditional media to explore womanhood through its ordinary and unnoticed moments. Through this approach, I seek to challenge this historically objectified representation of women in art, and instead offer a more personal and lived perspective grounded in my own experience as a young woman.
